A large oval shaped serving platter in very good condition, manufactured under the Losol Ware trade name by Keeling & Co. Ltd., Burslem and decorated in their pattern no. 5854 (replacements.com). The pattern was discontinued and is believed to have been released around the early 1920’s. It displays a series of fruits and leaves within a prominent band around the rim. Gold trim has also been used.

Keeling & Co. Ltd. were originally established by James Gildea who joined the firm of Bates and Walker in 1878 as a partner. Bates left in 1881 and the firm became Gildea & Walker. In 1885 Gildea took over the business and in 1887 it became Keeling & Co. when taken over by George, Joseph and Wilson Keeling who in 1905 employed Charlotte Rhead as an enameller. The firm ceased all production in 1936-1937 by mutual consent and is believed taken over by Dunn Bennett & Co. who themselves became part of the Doulton group in 1968.

The platter is stamped underneath Losol Ware Keeling & Co Ltd Burslem Made in England.

Some areas around the rim have faded gold trim, aside from this the item is in very good condition with no visible damages.
