Framed in a vintage gold coloured wood scoop frame behind protective glass, this item is am accurately depicted embroidery crafted in medium thread, which depicts the painting – “Young Girl Reading”.
The original painting from which this embroidery was made is officially titled – “Young Girl Reading” or “The Reader” and is an 18th century oil painting by French artist Jean-Honore Fragonard. It hangs in the National Gallery of Arts in Washington DC and was painted in 1770. The painting and thus by extension, the embroidery, features a young unidentified girl wearing a yellow dress with white ruff collar and cuffs and purple ribbons. The subject is depicted in profile, reading from a small book held in her right hand, sitting with her left arm on a wooden rail and her back supported by a large cushion resting against a wall.
The female in the piece was meant to represent the natural essence of femininity. Jean-Honore Fragonard was a French painter and printmaker who produced more than 550 paintings conveying an atmosphere of intimacy and veiled eroticism. The highest price paid at auction for any of Fragonard’s paintings was 28 million dollars in 2013. Jean-Honore Fragonard is popular today since many of his romance paintings have been used in the decoration of fine china by among others Limoges and Royal Vienna.
The frame has a backboard and is already wired to be displayed.

The frame has a few small chips due to age, but the embroidery and glass are both in very good condition.
