Manufactured by James Sadler & Sons Ltd., Sadler Pottery, Burslem Staffordshire, this item is a ceramic cream coloured biscuit barrel decorated in charming floral and leaf gold lustre patterns along the sides and on the lid. The biscuit barrel is designed with mildly fluted sides and fitted with a rattan swing handle. The lid is topped with a gold bun finial handle and copied on the sides of the barrel to hold the rattan handle.

James Sadler & Sons began manufacturing in 1899. The company was taken over by Churchill China in 2000 and the name changed.

This barrel will have been manufactured between 1947 and 1950, since Sadler is reputed to have begun to use both impressed marks along with blue Sadler marks after 1950.

The barrel is stamped underneath in black, Sadler Made in England

The lid has a hairline all the way through and there is fading of the gold lustre décor in areas, aside from which it is still in good usable condition.
