The firm of E&J Leek first began manufacturing in Birmingham during 1920 and relocated to London in 1930 as a Ltd. The firm is known to have closed permanently during the 1930’s and used the trade name “Celtic Plate” on their wares while based in London.
This item is a vintage silver plated clam/shell shaped butter dish with a repousse beaded pattern along the rim, three bun extensions underneath as feet and a hinged lid with thumb finial. The item has a frosted glass removable inner liner. Together with this butter dish comes a silver plated demitasse spoon.
The item is stamped above the hinge E&J Leek, Made in England. The absence of the trade name used in London (Celtic Plate) clearly places its manufacture in Birmingham before 1930.
Slight plate loss has occurred with age and the dish requires a polish, but aside from this there are no visible damages.
