The firm was established in 1865 by Absalom Wood and his son Thomas Francis Wood in Burslem. Wood & Son was then quickly built into one of the largest producers in the area. In 1954 the business became a public company under the name Wood & Son Ltd. During the 1970’s the firm had to fight two unsuccessful takeover attempts, one by Barrets and the other by Staffordshire Pottery which weakened it to such an extent that in 1982 it was taken over by the bank and in 2005 it was permanently closed.

The item is a rare antique porcelain salad bowl manufactured by Wood & Son between 1917 and 1929. The bowl is beautifully decorated in their “Montrose” pattern which is a rare hand finished floral patterning set into a cobalt blue border with gold scroll work.

Stamped underneath Montrose Woods Ware Enoch 1784 Ralph 1750 Wood & Son England.

Besides age related crazing and very slight discolouration the item is in very good second hand condition with no chips or cracks..
