MAW began in 1807 with a partnership between George Maw and his wife’s cousin Hornby. In 1814 the partnership ended and George Maw purchased a surgical instrument making business, continuing alone. In 1825 he was joined in the business by his son Charles and the business became S. Maw & Son. The business remained in family hands until the 1970’s when it was taken over by an international supplier.

In 1866 Maw designed and manufactured the first earthenware inhaler and merely changed the shape and design at various stages until 1905. This particular item is the ceramic Meritor improved inhaler manufactured by Maw of London during the very early 1900’s. The inhales was originally retailed with a sturdy cork in the rim. The cork is no longer present.

The inhaler is stamped underneath Made in England and impressed 80.

The mouthpiece has a tiny repaired chip on the rim and a 1.5 cm hairline exists on the inside of the rim, but not through to the outside (please see pictures).

Height: 15.8 cm, Diameter of base: 7.8 cm, Diameter of rim: 5.5 cm, Body: 12.2 cm, Length of mouthpiece: 5 cm
