Alfred Clough established the firm in 1905 going on to purchase St. Louis Works in 1928 and then registering his company in as Alfred Clough Ltd. in 1935. He purchased Royal Art Pottery in 1937, Cartwright & Edwards in 1955, Barker Bros and Sampson Smith Ltd. in 1956 and W.H. Grindley in 1960. In 1976 the Clough group was taken over by Newman Industries and its name was changed to Grindley of Stoke Ceramics Ltd. in 1978.
This item is a vintage ironstone side plate, manufactured by Alfred Clough Ltd. during the 1960’s. The side plate is decorated in the rare and discontinued Melody pattern, which depicts a blue and grey laurel edge motif along the verge and a floral bouquet within the well.
The plate is stamped underneath Melody Bone White Ironstone Alfred Clough Ltd. Staffordshire England Permanent Underglaze Detergent Proof Colours.
The plate has a hairline from the rim towards the well as well as a chip underneath the rim and feint age related crazing. In fair vintage condition.
