Alfred Clough established the firm in 1905 going on to purchase St. Louis Works in 1928 and then registering his company in as Alfred Clough Ltd. in 1935. He purchased Royal Art Pottery in 1937, Cartwright & Edwards in 1955, Barker Bros and Sampson Smith Ltd. in 1956 and W.H. Grindley in 1960. In 1976 the Clough group was taken over by Newman Industries and its name was changed to Grindley of Stoke Ceramics Ltd. in 1978.
This item is a vintage ironstone small casserole dish, manufactured by Alfred Clough Ltd. during the 1960’s. The casserole is decorated in the rare and discontinued Melody pattern, which depicts a blue and grey laurel motif along the outer surface.
The casserole is stamped underneath Melody Bone White Ironstone Alfred Clough Ltd. Staffordshire England Permanent Underglaze Detergent Proof Colours.
The casserole has no lid and has feint age related crazing and discolouration, aside from which it is in very good vintage condition.
