This version of the Fitzhugh pattern by Spode was produced between 1954 until its discontinuation in 1990, although the first trace of this pattern by Spode can be dated back to 1800 and has been repeated by Spode in different forms ever since. The pattern was inspired by hand paintings from the Orient and originated from three representatives of the Fitzhugh family, two who were sea captains and the third a director of the Dutch East India Company.
Spode as a company was established in 1776 and was bought by the Portmeiron Group in 2009, currently also having Royal Worcester and Pimpernel as part of the group.
This is a vintage tea duo manufactured by Spode and consisting of the London shaped tea cup and matching saucer, both decorated in the red Fitzhugh pattern, which was also released in green, blue, black and plum. The oriental symbol which, forms part of the Fitzhugh pattern at the centre of the saucer is the symbol for good fortune.
