This item is a rather heavy and solid bust crafted from cast alabaster, which has the precise qualities of marble. The bust depicts Greek philosopher Aristotle and is impressed at the base “Aristotle” in Greek Orthodox characters. Attention to detail is expertly evident in its creation.
Aristotle was born in Stagira, Macedonia in 384 BC, and was the son of Nicomachus, court physician to the Macedonian king. At the age of 17 he had already entered Plato’s academy in Athens and remained there until Plato’s death 20 years later. Between 343 BC and 340 BC he served as the tutor of young Alexander the Great, son of Philip II of Macedon. Aristotle’s written works range from politics, logic, psychology and ethics to poetry, rhetoric, biology and physics.
