White Colditz clay was already used prior to 1730 as one of Boettger porcelain (Meissen) ingredients. In 1804 Colditz Thomsberger & Hermann established a ceramics factory. Mass producing porcelain started in this East German city after 1948, when communist authorities decided to establish a factory here; VEB Porzellanwerk Colditz. In 1969 it was transformed into VEB Porzellancombinat Colditz, which lasted until the fall of the Wall. After German reunification, the company was privatised. The restructured firm employed only 300 people. Efforts to keep the company running lasted until 1998, when it went bankrupt.

Heinrich Baensch porcelain manufactory was established in Lettin in 1858. This central German porcelain factory swiftly secured sales markets at home and abroad. After hard times during the Great Depression and WWII (the factory went into bankruptcy twice), in 1946 production was resumed. The factory was gradually nationalised and since 1953 produced as VEB Porzellanwerk. From the 1960s there was a close cooperation with the art college Kunsthochschule Burg Giebichenstein. In 1990 after privatisation production was definitely stopped.
