The firm was established by John Swinnerton in 1885 at Burton Place Works in Hanley, Stoke-On-Trent. Swinnerton renamed the premises Vulcan Works. In 1911 Swinnertons became an Ltd. and also purchased the Chelsea Works. In 1917 the Washington Pottery as well as Scotia pottery were purchased and in 1952 Davison & Son Ltd. were purchased. In 1959 the Swinnerton Group was taken over by the Lawley Group and in 1964 when the Lawley Group became part of Allied English Potteries, the Swinnerton name ceased being used altogether. In 1973 Allied English Potteries became part of Royal Doulton.

The item is a Swinnertons Royal Wessex white ironstone tea trio in the Golden Arbour pattern of the 1960’s. The pattern display warranted 22kt gold leaf and floral design around the verge of the tea plate, saucer and tea cup. All three items have also been designed with a fluted swirl along the surface and scalloped rims for the tea plate and saucer. Gold trim has been used on the tea cup handle as well as on the rim.

The tea cup is impressed Made in England. The saucer is stamped Royal Wessesx White Ironstone Made in England by Swinnertons. The tea plate has the same mark as the saucer with the additional “Golden Arbour” Warranted 22 kt gold..

The tea plate has some loss of gold trim as well as feint crazing but no loss of patterning, aside from which all is in very good condition..
